ALGASL and VNG International, under its DANWADAAG Program, organized meetings, workshops, and data collection to formulate comprehensive Five-Year Strategic DRM Plans for Hargeisa and Burao districts.

12-Feb-2024

Between December 17 and 28, VNG International, under its DANWADAAG Program, organized a series of activities aimed at strengthening disaster risk management (DRM) efforts in Hargeisa and Burao. These activities involved Coordination meetings with senior leadership of DRM stakeholders, training sessions for key technical staff of DRM stakeholders, and an extensive data collection exercise for the DRM Units of Hargeisa and Burao municipalities. The overarching goal of these efforts was to facilitate the formulation of comprehensive, participatory, and stakeholder-informed five-year strategic DRM plans for the respective districts.

At the heart of these strategic plans lies a commitment to active community involvement in the identification of potential and known disasters within their respective areas and the identification of viable solutions. The approach to data collection and consultation for the district DRM plans in Burao and Hargeisa underscores principles of inclusive governance and the cultivation of resilience against natural calamities.

This comprehensive approach involves a range of critical elements, including vulnerability assessments, disaster profiling and risk analysis. By integrating diverse stakeholder perspectives and conducting meticulous assessments, the district-led strategic plans aspire to substantially fortify the disaster risk management capabilities of Hargeisa and Burao local authorities.

The proactive nature of these plans is designed to facilitate more efficient responses to future disasters while simultaneously mitigating their adverse impacts on vulnerable communities. Through collaborative activities and active community participation, these initiatives serve as catalysts for the development of robust disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, ultimately nurturing resilience and safeguarding the well-being of the populations in Hargeisa and Burao.

As a testament to their commitment to effective DRM strategic planning, the final versions of these strategic plans will undergo rigorous approval and validation processes by local authorities, underscoring the dedication of Hargeisa and Burao districts to fostering resilient communities.
