Fostering Partnerships: Donors and ALGASL Discuss Local Governance and Development in Somaliland
Hargeisa, Somaliland
The Association of Local Governments of Somaliland (ALGASL) recently hosted a high-level delegation from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Netherlands Embassy in Kenya. The meeting focused on the progress and future direction of the Danwadaag Project, a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing local governance in Somaliland.
The discussions highlighted key areas of focus, including:
Improving Service Delivery: Ensuring local governments have the resources and capacity to meet the needs of their communities effectively.
Advancing Decentralization: Strengthening local governance structures to bring decision-making closer to the people.
Promoting Economic Growth: Encouraging local economic development to boost livelihoods and reduce poverty.
The Netherlands delegation reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Somaliland’s local governments in building sustainable systems that promote development and self-reliance.
The Danwadaag Project, co-managed by ALGASL and VNG International, represents a significant investment in Somaliland’s future. It seeks to empower local governments with the tools, training, and resources they need to improve public services and foster inclusive growth.
Building Partnerships for Sustainable Development
Speaking at the meeting, ALGASL emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with international partners. “The support of the Netherlands government has been instrumental in advancing our vision for stronger, more efficient local governance,” said an ALGASL representative.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the significance of local governments in driving development. "Empowering local authorities is essential for creating resilient communities and achieving long-term stability and growth,” said a delegation member.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing local governance in Somaliland through enhanced service delivery, decentralization, and economic growth. ALGASL and its partners plan to scale up efforts to strengthen local government systems and build capacity.
This collaboration exemplifies how partnerships between international donors and local organisations can drive meaningful progress, bringing Somaliland closer to achieving its development goals.
