Disaster Resilience: Workshop on Enhancing Local Government DRM Structures and Coordination Mechanisms in Somaliland

Hargeisa, Somaliland

On September 25-26, 2024, a critical workshop aimed at reviewing and enhancing Disaster Risk Management (DRM) structures and coordination mechanisms for local municipalities took place in Hargeisa. The Association of Local Government Authorities of Somaliland (ALGASL) organised the two-day event in collaboration with VNG International, under the Danwadaag program.

The workshop gathered directors and representatives from various local government departments across Hargeisa, Burco, Berbera, and Gabiley. The primary objective was to assess and update the existing DRM frameworks to ensure municipalities are better equipped to manage disaster risks and improve coordination between local governments.

Participants worked together to review current DRM strategies and introduced refinements to strengthen disaster preparedness and response capabilities. The directors also discussed adapting these strategies to local contexts, ensuring effective implementation within their respective districts.

By the end of the workshop, attendees unanimously approved updated DRM strategies and expressed their commitment to reinforcing disaster management efforts in their municipalities. The workshop's collaboration fostered valuable knowledge sharing and reaffirmed the importance of local-level coordination in addressing disaster risks.

The event underscored ALGASL's ongoing dedication to improving disaster resilience and promoting effective decentralization through enhanced DRM structures.

Together, we are building a resilient future by uniting local governments to transform disaster risk management in Somaliland.
