VNG International Plays A Crucial Role in Supporting the Annual Climate Change Conference, Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Hargeisa, Somaliland

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Somaliland organized the Annual Climate Change Conference in Hargeisa, on November 20 – 21, 2023. The primary objective of this initiative was to foster a collective understanding of climate change effects in Somaliland, encouraging collaborative efforts to address the underlying causes of climate change. This initiative was especially vital as Somaliland faces an increased risk of climate change effects, including recurring droughts and El Niño-induced floods.

Acknowledging the symbiotic relationship between the Annual Climate Change Conference and DANWADAAG Programme's overarching objective of "Improving the social contract through inclusive and transparent Disaster Risk Management," VNG International has stepped in by joining the sponsors of the conference. This strategic involvement is marked by a tangible commitment, with the organization contributing significantly to the financial underpinnings of the conference.

DANWADAAG Programme's distinctive approach to enhancing the social contract through inclusive and transparent Disaster Risk Management aligns seamlessly with the conference's goal. The emphasis on inclusivity and transparency in disaster risk management resonates with the broader theme of the conference, emphasizing the importance of collective action and collaborative strategies to address the challenges posed by climate change.

Furthermore, this adaptive approach ensures that interventions are tailored to the specific needs and circumstances of the community in Somaliland, enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of the disaster risk management initiatives.

The conference which was officially inaugurated by Somaliland’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Honorable Shukri Bandare. The event was attended by more than 255 delegates, drew from the international Development Partners, Central Government officials, local authorities, civil society, the private sector, academia and the media.

_“Each tree in our environment sustains the livelihoods of ten people. Yet, we frequently cut these trees for fuel, while the efforts to replenish and restore our environment lag behind, and the number of trees planted remains insufficient." _Says Minister Shukri in her opening statement.

Key discussions at the conference centered on the development of effective strategies and policies for climate change adaptation. Notably, there was a strong emphasis on the adoption of green energies, with a focus on alternatives to charcoal, such as liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPGs). This shift aims to mitigate deforestation and protect the environment. Additionally, participants advocated for reducing the use of plastic bags and other environmentally harmful products. Emphasis was placed on adherence to National Policies and Laws to further contribute to the creation of a clean and green environment.

The collective efforts of VNG International and other stakeholders at the Annual Climate Change Conference underscore the commitment to sustainable practices and the importance of global collaboration in the face of climate challenges.

DANWADAAG aims to increase government legitimacy through efficient and effective disaster risk management (DRM) based on access to information, inclusive policies and services. DRM is approached as a channel to improve the social contract between communities and public authorities.
